Yarn stash & row counter

Every feature, from the first launch.

No account, no login, no cloud. Everything runs on your device and works fully offline — nothing in this post is hidden behind a wall.

What Skein does

Skein is the pocket companion for knitters and crocheters who want to know what's in their stash and where they are in their pattern — without an account, a subscription, or a network connection.

Snap a photo of a yarn ball in a shop and Skein instantly surfaces the closest color matches from your own stash, all matched on-device. Build out your library with brand, weight, yardage, fiber blend, dye lot, and the bin you stored it in. Link a yarn to a project and Skein tracks how much you have left as you log finished rows.

Counting rows? Skein gives you giant tap targets, haptic feedback, and multiple named counters per project — body, sleeve A, sleeve B, and the 8-row lace repeat all visible at once. Mistap? One tap undoes it. Phone goes to sleep mid-row? Your counters are exactly where you left them.

No login. No cloud. No subscription. Buy once, count forever.

99 one-time): unlimited projects, unlimited counters per project, photo color match, project photo log, CSV export.

Made for the knit-along, the long flight, the yarn-shop crawl. Pick up Skein and let your stash work for you.

What's inside

  • Yarn stash library — Add yarn balls with photo, brand, weight class, yardage, fiber blend, dye lot, storage bin, and notes. Sort by color, brand, weight, or location.
  • Multi-counter project — Each project holds multiple named counters with giant tap targets, undo, and haptic feedback. All counters visible at once on a single screen.
  • Photo color match — Point the camera at any yarn ball, capture a frame, and Skein computes Lab-color distance against every stash entry on-device to surface the closest matches in under a second.
  • Linked yarn consumption — Link a yarn from your stash to a project, enter rows-per-yard for the gauge, and Skein subtracts estimated yardage from the linked yarn as you tap rows.
  • Project photo log — Snap progress photos tied to the current row count. Skein builds a chronological timeline of the project for sharing or admiration.
  • Onboarding — Four-screen welcome flow explaining stash, counters, color match, and pricing — sets the tone with warm cream-and-clay visuals.

Why we built it

Knitters and crocheters can't remember what yarn they own, can't tell from a phone photo whether a yarn in a shop will match the partial skein at home, and lose their place in multi-section patterns when a single-counter app forces them to track sleeves and body separately on paper.

What makes it different

No major knitting app pairs an on-device camera color-match against your personal stash with a multi-counter project tracker — KnitCompanion is a pattern viewer at $25, Ravelry's app is a community catalog that needs an account, and free counters like Knit Counter offer a single number with ads. Skein's wedge is: poin…
